Finding players, opposition, and match officials

Most club cricket problems are availability problems. Looking For is a board for the recurring ones — a short guide to posting requests that actually get answered.

What people post

Players wanted
A club short for a specific fixture, or recruiting for a season. The most common post by a wide margin.
Opposition wanted
A free date and a ground, looking for a friendly. Usually posted by a fixtures secretary weeks ahead.
Umpires and scorers
Match officials for a specific date. Qualified officials are the scarcest resource in club cricket, so post early.
Grounds and nets
Venue availability, both for fixtures and for winter net sessions.
Live streamers
Someone to run a camera and overlay for a final or a televised club fixture.

Writing a request that gets a reply

  1. Lead with the date and format. A player deciding whether to reply needs to know if it is a 40-over Saturday or a Thursday evening T20 before anything else.
  2. Say where. The nearest town and travelling time matter more than a club name a stranger will not recognise.
  3. State the standard honestly. A side that oversells its level loses the player after one game and gains a reputation.
  4. Be specific about the role. 'Need a seamer who can bat at eight' gets better replies than 'need players'.
  5. Say what you cover. Match fees, teas, transport, and whether a guest player needs registering.

Etiquette

  • Close your post once the slot is filled. Stale posts waste everyone's time and dilute the board.
  • Reply to people who offered, even to decline. Club cricket is a small world and today's decline is next season's regular.
  • Check registration and eligibility rules before confirming a guest for a league fixture — a win conceded on eligibility is worse than a loss.
  • Do not post personal phone numbers in the public description. Use the in-app reply so contact details stay between the two parties.
